Grand Rapids weekend event guide

This weekend in Grand Rapids marks a very exciting time of the year. As Christmas approaches  the amount of activities downtown and around Grand Rapids increases. Here’s what’s going on this weekend:

Friday 12-7-12:

The Grand Rapids Brewing Co. inaugural weekend. This brand new, all organic brewery/bar located on Ionia St. is now open for business. More info via Facebook.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra: At Van Andel Arena, the TSO performs “The Lost Christmas Eve” at 4PM and 8PM. More info.

Coopersville Santa Parade: 7PM in downtown Coopersville. Event is free and all ages. Click for more info.

Sinterklaas Eve: Downtown Holland, 7PM. The Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) lives on at this parafe through the streets of Holland. Click for more info.

Saturday 12-8-12

Festival of Lights: Calvary Church puts on an event “With timeless music, a 100+ voice choir, an amazing dramatic cast and over 200,000 twinkling lights, A Time for Christmas will warm your heart. Performances will be December 7-9 and 14-16 at 3:00pm and 7:00pm.”  Ticket info here.

Rooftop Reindeer: At Meijer Gardens, 1-4PM. “As part of the Meijer Gardens’ Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World exhibition, live Reindeer will be visiting our English Perennial and Bulb Garden for pictures, petting and fun!” Website for more info.

GVSU basketball vs. Ohio Dominican: 1:00 PM, gates open at noon. It’s Winter Wonderland Saturday at GVSU. Free tickets to both the men’s and women’s basketball games and take a photo with Santa and Louie the Laker. Website for more info.

Sunday: Grand Rapids Griffins vs. the Rockford Ice Hogs. Lots going on this weekend at Van Andel Arena.

Salute to Heroes: The Griffins will honor local heroes throughout the evening. Firefighters, police and paramedics are encourage to take advantage of special ticket offers to attend.Superhero Cape Giveaway: The first 1,500 fans will receive a Griffins’ superhero cape, in conjunction with Salute to Heroes night.
Huntington Bank Post-Game Autographs: Jeff Hoggan, Petr Mrazek and Tomas Tatar will sign autographs following the game from the team’s bench.
Reading Goals: Children with Griff’s Reading Goals bookmarks who have completed the required three hours of reading can redeem their bookmark for two free upper level tickets to any of the following games: Nov. 23 and 25; Dec. 9, 19 and 22; Feb. 6, 17 and 24; March 13; and April 10.
Sunday is Fun Day!: Every Sunday, enjoy $1 Pepsi drinks and $1 ice cream from 3-5 p.m.
Library Nights: For every Sunday and Wednesday game, fans can present their Grand Rapids Public Library card or Kent District Library card at the Van Andel Arena box office on the night of the game or at The Zone anytime during the store’s regular business hours to save $7 off the price of a Lower Level Faceoff ticket (regularly $18 in advance and $20 day of game). Limit four tickets per card per person, subject to availability.
MOS Corner Office presented by Michigan Office Solutions: Located on the terrace level above section 118, this section provides the best seats in the house for groups of up to 30 people, with La-Z-Boy chairs and an array of amenities. Call (616) 774-4585.
Military Night: Every home game this season, current members of our military can purchase up to four upper bowl tickets for $13 each (or $11 in advance at The Zone) with a valid military ID. The offer also extends to veterans who present a VA ID or discharge papers.
